Medical officials in Tugela Ferry have warned that the Extreme Drug Resistant Tuberculosis (XDR-TB) outbreak, which has killed 60 people in the area since January last year, could get worse. This included eight people admitted to hospital with XDR-TB between March and August this year who have also died.
Dr Tony Moll, Principal Medical Officer at the Church of Scotland Hospital in Tugela Ferry, said three patients remained at the hospital with XDR-TB. He had hope that "at least one of them will survive".
XDR-TB is a virulent form of TB which is resistant to the two drugs used to treat multi-drug resistant TB, and to which people with HIV and Aids are particularly susceptible.
In Anbetracht der Tatsache, dass zwischen 2002 und 2004 weltweit gerade einmal 347 Menschen an XDR-TB, einer extrem gegen Medikamente resistenten Variante des
Tuberkulose-Erregers, gestorben sind, sind 60 Todesfälle innerhalb nicht einmal eines Jahres in einer relativ kleinen Region extrem Besorgnis erregend.
Auch wenn die bisherigen Opfer fast alle HIV-positiv waren, steht zu befürchten, dass sich derartige Erreger weiter verbreiten und auch weiter mutieren.
